Renewed Prosecution of Former Malawian Finance Minister for Alleged IMF Misreporting

The Director of Public Prosecutions in Malawi, Masauko Chamkakala, has reignited the legal pursuit of former Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamveka over accusations of financial misreporting to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) between 2018 and 2019.

Recent developments indicate that the state, represented by Director of Criminal Litigation Dzikondianthu Malunda, has formally requested the Lilongwe Magistrate to transfer Mwanamveka's case to the High Court for further proceedings.

Mwanamveka, who was arrested in December 2021, had previously been charged alongside former Reserve Bank of Malawi governor Dalitso Kabambe and deputy governor Henry Mathanga. They stood accused of providing misleading information to the IMF, suggesting compliance with conditions tied to a $108 million Extended Credit Facility (ECF) during the Democratic Progressive Party-led administration.

Although High Court Judge Redson Kapindu discharged Mwanamveka in January, citing insufficient evidence presented by the state, legal action against Kabambe and Mathanga continues.
