National Development Party Denies Involvement in AFORD Political Turmoil

The newly established National Development Party (NDP), under the leadership of Frank Mwenifumbo, has vehemently refuted media claims linking it to the recent political unrest within the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD).

Various media outlets alleged that NDP leadership sponsored AFORD youths to expel their Secretary General, Wakuda Kamanga, from his office, fueling tensions within the party. Additionally, reports suggested that NDP received funding from the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to destabilize AFORD.

Frank Mwenifumbo, interim President of NDP, dismissed these accusations as baseless political propaganda aimed at tarnishing the party's reputation. He emphasized that NDP has no involvement in the internal conflicts of AFORD or any other political entity in the country.

Mwenifumbo questioned the logic behind Kamanga's supposed affiliation with NDP if the party was indeed responsible for orchestrating attacks against him. He asserted that Kamanga's decision to seek refuge in NDP contradicts allegations of NDP's involvement in the unrest.

Addressing the allegations of receiving funds from MCP to undermine AFORD, Mwenifumbo clarified that NDP has no alliance with the ruling party and lacks any connection to MCP's agenda. He highlighted the financial struggles faced by NDP, emphasizing that if the party had significant sponsors like MCP, it would not face challenges in organizing rallies or acquiring party materials.

Furthermore, Mwenifumbo emphasized NDP's independence by citing its participation in the Karonga by-elections and refusal to endorse MCP candidates. He attributed NDP's growing popularity in the northern region to its appealing ideologies rather than financial support.

Mwenifumbo urged journalists to maintain impartiality in their reporting and avoid perpetuating political bias. He condemned attempts to sow discord between NDP and AFORD, emphasizing the importance of objective journalism.

Notably, Mwenifumbo's political journey traces back to 1999 when he began his career with AFORD under the leadership of its founder, Thom Chakufwa Chihana.
