Malawian President Dismisses US Travel Ban on Former Officials
During the opening of the Agricultural Investment Conference in Lilongwe, President Lazarus Chakwera scoffed at the recent travel ban imposed by the United States on four former Malawian officials facing corruption charges. Chakwera dismissed the ban as "laughable," emphasizing that the US should focus on its internal challenges instead.
Chakwera highlighted issues such as gun violence, police brutality against black communities, drug trafficking, segregation, and border security as pressing concerns for the US government. He expressed surprise at the US government's haste in passing judgment on individuals who are still undergoing legal proceedings in Malawi.
Asserting the independence and capability of Malawi's judiciary, Chakwera cautioned against foreign interference in the country's affairs. He attributed negative perceptions from abroad to unpatriotic voices within Malawi who undermine the nation's reputation.
Shifting the focus to the conference, Chakwera praised its potential to boost Malawi's economy and urged youth and women to engage in commercial farming. Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of the conference in advancing the goals outlined in the Malawi 2063 blueprint.
