Malawi Government Initiates Construction of Houses for Cabinet Ministers

The Malawi Government has unveiled plans to construct 30 houses in Lilongwe for Cabinet ministers, aimed at saving approximately K360 million annually spent on housing allowances or rentals. Additionally, five houses for senior government officials are slated for construction as part of the 2024 Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP).

This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands, aims to provide decent housing for ministers and senior government officials. While the document does not specify the funding source, it highlights the government's commitment to reducing expenditure pressure on the national budget. With 13 houses currently available for ministers, the construction of new residences will align the housing supply with ministerial demand.

However, amidst limited resources, the government faces the challenge of prioritizing housing projects for chiefs, security officers, and teachers. The PSIP also outlines other ongoing initiatives, including the continuation of house construction for security personnel and chiefs.

Despite procurement delays and inflationary pressures, the government remains dedicated to addressing long-term housing needs across various sectors.
