Malawi Electoral Commission Warns Against Vote Buying Ahead of Elections

The Commissioner of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Emanuel Fabiano, has reiterated that offering money or gifts to individuals in exchange for their votes is illegal and punishable under the law.

Fabiano emphasized that people should prioritize development initiatives such as schools and health centers in their communities rather than engaging in electoral malpractice.

He made these remarks in Thyolo District, where he urged party leaders to refrain from such practices as they undermine the principles of good governance.

However, the Deputy Secretary General of the UTM party in government, Charles George, argues that it's difficult to convince someone with your ideas without offering incentives because many people demand them.

He appealed for financial support to ensure fair elections as there are already reports of leaders misusing funds and other resources for personal gain.

MEC is actively engaging with various stakeholders on electoral laws as the country gears up for the upcoming elections.
