DPP Demands Transparency on Passport Supply Contract

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has called on the government to provide clarity on a passport supply contract awarded to local firm E-Tech Systems. In a statement, DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba expressed concern over the company's capacity to supply passports, citing its alleged links to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) members.

Namalomba claimed that the contract was "rewarded" to the firm rather than being awarded through a fair procurement process, putting Malawians at a disadvantage. He described the secretive nature of the procurement process as "a stark reminder that the regime has no regard for the rule of law."

The DPP has urged the Office of the Attorney General to intervene in the matter. Namalomba suggested that the cancellation of the Techno Brain passports printing contract was not done in good faith.

In response, Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu assured that the government has no problem sharing information on the contract with the public. He stated that the responsible ministry and departments are prepared to do so. Kunkuyu dismissed claims that E-Tech Systems is linked to MCP members, emphasizing that the company has already started issuing passports and is capable of fulfilling the contract.
