MPs Under Fire for Neglecting Constituencies
In light of the Malawi Electoral Commission's recent establishment of new constituencies, many Members of Parliament (MPs) are being accused of neglecting their current areas of responsibility in favor of focusing on the newly demarcated regions.
One such case involves Honorable Chifundo Makande, the registrar for Balaka Central East constituency, who is alleged to have abandoned his constituency entirely in pursuit of the Rivirivi constituency.
Local chiefs have corroborated these claims, asserting that Makande ceased visiting the constituency long ago. Additionally, there are allegations that the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) intended for Balaka Central East is being redirected to development projects in the constituency where Makande intends to contest in the 2025 elections.
Some community members have voiced their agreement with these allegations, expressing frustration over the apparent abandonment.
Responding to the accusations, Makande refuted the claims, attributing them to individuals attempting to tarnish his reputation.
While he admitted to not being highly visible in the constituency, Makande asserted that he is actively implementing development projects through the CDF, citing examples such as court constructions and infrastructure development.
Social commentator Francis Liyati weighed in on the situation, criticizing MPs for neglecting their constituencies and exploiting resources for personal gain.
As the 2025 elections approach, there are calls for MPs to prioritize their current responsibilities and serve their constituents diligently.
