Government Urges Chiefs to Prioritize Development Over Politics




Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture, Owen Chomanika, urged Chiefs to collaborate with the government in advancing the nation's development instead of getting involved in partisan politics.

During the installation ceremony of three Chiefs – Traditional Authority Mwambo, Traditional Authority Kumtumanji, and Sub Traditional Authority Ramusi – held at Matiti Primary School in Zomba, Chomanika emphasized the pivotal role Chiefs play in fostering development through village and area-level structures.

Addressing chieftaincy matters, Chomanika underscored the importance of adhering to proper procedures when selecting successors, citing the case of the Mwambo chieftaincy, which remained vacant for 18 years due to clan disputes.

Commending the Chief Council in Zomba for resolving the Mwambo chieftaincy disputes and ensuring a smooth succession process, Chomanika relayed President Lazarus Chakwera's best wishes to the newly installed Chiefs, urging them to lead their communities effectively and avoid political exploitation.

Member of Parliament for Zomba Nsondole, Abu Naliwa, expressed satisfaction with the installation of Traditional Authority Kumtumanji after a prolonged vacancy, expressing optimism for the area's development under the new leadership.

In response, T/A Mwambo, formerly known as Wellington Pendame, pledged to collaborate with the government in developmental efforts and serve the state and his subjects diligently.

Similarly, Jones Milazi, a resident under T/A Kumtumanji, welcomed the government's initiative in installing a new Chief after a lengthy period and anticipated positive strides in development.

The government recommended Richard Kapandasalu as T/A Kumtumanji and Wellington Pendame as T/A Mwambo in January 2024, alongside the appointment of Faida Mdawa as Sub/T/A Ramusi, with all three Chiefs officially installed in April.
